As we've been reporting, resort real estate around the country continues to rebound. Ski resort, lakefront and beach area real estate are all seeing continuous, albeit modest, gains. Here is an example from the Gulf Coast. It's great to see the Gulf Coast real estate and tourism businesses making yearly gains after the dual devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill. A recent publication by the Urban Land Institute (ULI), “What’s Next? Real Estate in the New Economy” makes some interesting observations about the future of our housing habits as a society as we move out of the Great Recession. The parts of the publication that are relevant to resort real estate were referenced recently by Patrick Phillips, CEO of the ULI, during a talk he gave last week in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he owns a second home.

Barbara’s site, as its name denotes, is about California and all of its culturally rich and geographically stunning diversity. Vail resorts is the first major ski areas to announce its plans for upgraded summer activities that are now allowable thanks to a new law that was signed into effect by Congress this past fall. Most ski areas around the country are on Federal lands that are leased by the resort operators. Until this law was enacted the ski areas were limited to winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding.
