A recent publication by the Urban Land Institute (ULI), “What’s Next? Real Estate in the New Economy” makes some interesting observations about the future of our housing habits as a society as we move out of the Great Recession. The parts of the publication that are relevant to resort real estate were referenced recently by Patrick Phillips, CEO of the ULI, during a talk he gave last week in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he owns a second home.

Over the years we have looked at hundreds, if not thousands, of websites of small businesses located in resort areas.  We’ve noticed that, in general, these sites tend to be less sophisticated, and therefore less effective, than their counterparts in more populated regions. We can venture a few guesses as to why this is the case, and we’ll explain why ignoring technology is an extremely bad idea, no matter how beautiful your natural surroundings.
